The 8th, 9th and 10th of May will be the regularly scheduled work weekend and it will be a busy weekend for the volunteers that can come. As you already know the Cavalla is open for visitors but it still could use a good cleaning. We are preparing to conduct a Memorial Day Service as well later in May and it would be very much apprericated to see the Cavalla shine for that service. If there are adequate volunteers it would be a great idea to paint the exterior as well. That can be decided on the work weekend.

I'll be onsite after our base meeting on Saturday.

John, can you get about a ton of Bondo, so that we can smooth out the surface on the stern area before we paint?

The bow area is going to be a real pain. I suggest we cut away the badly corroded plating. Visitors will think we opened up the area to show the torpedo tubes and sonar dome (at least until we can form and weld up cover plates later. John, that means we need alot of grinding and cutting wheels. I can bring down my grinder so we have several to use to speed up the process. We will need the generators onsite to power the grinders.

As I learned from grinding off that old stairway support, one needs goggles and a dust mask when grinding. I had breathing problems for three weeks afterwards. There is at least one more support that needs removal.

Any status on the deck tiles for the ATR? We need levelling compound and grout plus the tiles.

So:

Bondo
Grinders
Grinding wheels
Cutting wheels
Wire wheels
Goggles
Dust masks
Primer
Paint
Paint trays
Paint brushes/rollers
Paint scrapers
Hydroblaster (okay, a HP sprayer) (will have to make sure the EPA is not in the area due to the lead paint on the hull)
Generators
Extension cords
An allen wrench that will fit the torpedo band clamp do we can remove the afterbody. We need a TM to advise us on how to disconnect all the fittings.
Crane to lift torpedo into lower aft tube area after cleaning, clearing, and painting.
Deck tile levelling compound
Deck tile adhesive
Deck tiles

How's that for a wish list?

A very good list Mike, and to address a few items............
We are contracting to have the ATR deck leveled and re-tiled and the pressure washer is fueled and ready to go. I will have plenty of paint and tools on hand to do most of the work. I also have two generators that can be used in the bow area with power tools.

Bring about thirty volunteers with you and we will "get 'er done"Smile

Five things...
1. I can't make the work week end but plan to come down to help for the Memorial Day weekend. I plan on coming down on the 21st and heading home on the Tue the 26th.

2. Normally I stay on the Stewart but I notice this old body would rather sleep on a soft bed and watch TV from that bed. Since IKE I am not sure which motels are reasonable and suitable anymore. Does anyone know for sure?

3. How is 124 and 87 from Winne Tx to the ferrys on Bolivar ??

4. Any other volunteers headed down for the Memorial Day weekend?

5. Wouldn't it be quicker to use a torch to cut out the bad areas rather than grinding it out? (never used a torch in my life).

Keg, I will be staying the weekend before Memorial day, just to help with all the little things that come up.

I stay in my travel trailer that is in the park parking lot.

It has plenty of room, a TV, and I bring DVDs (and munchies). If you want to save on hotel costs, you can crash in the trailer. I bring down fresh water to fill the tank and also my generator, so if the propane tanks go empty, the water heater and A/C still work.

The trailer will remain onsite until the Stewart is habitable (probably around June) for the use of volunteers.

Let me know.

Thanks Mike, the offer is appreciated. However, I decided to stay in motel instead. I should be down there Thurs afternoon.
